Today is my favorite kind of day. I spent yesterday shopping for ingredients and today making thirteen quarts of super-hot chunky black bean and roasted corn salsa. It’s a lot of work but worth every minute of labor. My better-half was born and raised in south Texas and insists salsa should be nice and smooth and hot. I prefer my salsa to be chunky and OMG hot so I jacked up the heat a little because good salsa should always make your head sweat. Enough about my salsa. Let’s talk about some scary food facts since I’m in the mood.

  • While the results of water contamination tests are made public, manufacturers of bottled water do not divulge their test results.
  • Almost 99% of imported food is never inspected by the FDA or the USDA, the two agencies responsible for protecting Americans from tainted products.
  • One in five office coffee mugs contains fecal bacteria and E. coli, which can cause diarrhea, food poisoning, and infections.
  • Vegetarians beware: many low-fat and nonfat yogurts and sweets contain gelatin, which is made from animal tendons, ligaments, and bones.
  • Even when grapes are harvested by hand, some insects wind up in the picker’s baskets. Workers simply don’t have time to inspect every grape individually as they work.

  • Long a staple of the American diet and US economy, corn is a high-carbohydrate, high-glycemic food that fattens up cattle and does the same to humans who consume it in excess.
  • Beef cattle evolved to survive on grass but are regularly fed corn, which has disastrous effects on their digestive systems, requiring a constant regimen of antibiotics to keep them healthy.
  • Peanut allergies afflict an estimated 4 million Americans and can be life-threatening. Almost half of annual emergency room visits and two thirds of deaths due to anaphylaxis are the result of peanut allergies.
  • Independent studies show that bell peppers, celery, kale, carrots, lettuce, and potatoes are the vegetables most likely to expose consumers to pesticides, despite being rinsed and peeled.
  • A diet high in processed meats like sausage, hot dogs, and luncheon meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Chemical reactions that occur during the preparation of these meets yields carcinogens.

Using all of my past years of people watching as reference material I’ve come to the conclusion there must be one helluva lot of people in this world who are neat-freaks and germaphobes. There must be hundreds of thousands of us out there because we seem to be mentioned in every TV show and movie there is.  Someone’s always mentioned as being "so anal" or “too anal”.  It irritates me only because I’m one of them.  I’m a certifiable neat-freak and proud of it and have been for years. I’m also reasonably sure that we neat-freaks aren’t nearly as crazy as those damn germaphobes.

If you aren’t either a neat-freak or germaphobe you may become one after reading the following tidbits of information.  More useless and somewhat disgusting information you probably don’t really want to know. Enjoy it anyway.

  • Bottled water is rarely tested for purity. An Environmental Working Group study found that ten popular brands were riddled with chemicals and pollutants, some as high as regular tap water.

06-01-2014 Journal Entry–The Texas Trip!   Leave a comment

I’ve spent the last few days complaining about United Airlines and the  terrible time they gave me while traveling. So today maybe I should calm down and thank my nephew for being such a good host. I’d hate to make people think that my entire Memorial Day weekend had been totally ruined because of an unfortunate incident when it really wasn’t.

I managed to drag my camera around with us during my visit and took a few hundred photos.  I thought I’d share some of them with you today,  These first few are of the highlight of the trip as far as crazy delicious food was concerned. The name of the place is The Hard Eight and this was the line at the entrance when we arrived.  You could smell that barbecue for miles around.

As we waited in line the smell of cooking meat was overwhelming and as we approached the grill station it got even worse. This is their outrageous version of a menu hanging on the wall.

And then you walk to the grill and see this.

You can almost smell it just by looking at these pictures.  You choose your meat, it’s placed on a tray covered with wax paper, it’s weighed and priced and then your off to the dining room to choose your side dishes.

We enjoyed the band playing C&W music as we ate and OMG was it incredible.  We ate until we couldn’t move and then just sat there to enjoy the atmosphere for a few minutes.  The prices were reasonable and I’d recommend this establishment to anyone going anywhere near Dallas.  It’s barbecue heaven.

This was just day one of the trip and I have many more photo’s that will follow in the next week or so.  I also feel somewhat obligated to introduce all of you to my new best friend and Texas bedmate. She made me feel right at  home and actually snored and kicked less than my better-half does in Maine. Her name is Pepper.
