08/19/2022 “TRUE FACTS”   Leave a comment

Any day is a good day to be told the truth. How’s that for words to live by? Some of these topics will definitely pique your interest. Sometimes the weirder the facts the truer the statements. See what you think.

Let’s try some sports:

  • The infamous Bill Buckner of Red Sox fame had more career hits and Ted Williams.
  • During World War II, so many NFL players were fighting in the war that the rival Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers temporarily teamed up to form the “Steagles”
  • Walter Payton once threw a touchdown pass, caught a touchdown pass, and ran for a touchdown in the same game.
  • Legend has it that Hall of Fame baseball player Wade Boggs once drank 107 beers in one day while traveling with the team.
  • The only team to score 3 touchdowns in under 1 min. in the NFL is the New England Patriots. And they’ve done it twice.

Now for little sci-fi:

  • It takes 200 million years for the sun to make one orbit around the galactic center.
  • In order for the earth to become a black hole, its entire mass would have to be compressed into a space less than an inch in diameter.
  • The sun makes up over 99% of the solar system’s entire mass.
  • Venus spends backwards and no one knows why!
  • Every planet in the solar system could fit in the space between Earth and the moon. Even if you count Pluto.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

HOME SWEET HOME

With space travel once again becoming fashionable, we can thank the SpaceX corporation. Not only have they been innovative, but they’ve also become a thorn in the side for NASA. It’s good for the country to finally have a competitor for NASA that is quite simply “kicking their butt” and giving the big finger to the Russians as well. I foresee China as eventually becoming the leader in all things space-related unless some catastrophe slows them down a little. Unfortunately, I don’t see them reacting to disasters as we do. They would likely close ranks and keep right on going until their goals are met. Elon Musk will become their only real competitor for a time. With all of that in mind let’s check out a little “Out of This World” trivia.

  • A 150-pound earthling weighs in at 4200 pounds on the sun’s surface.
  • A lightning bolt on earth is hotter than the surface of the sun.
  • On Venus, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
  • Also, on Venus their day is longer than their year. It takes longer for Venus to rotate on its own axis than it does to complete one orbit around the sun.
  • NASA uses the same rocket technology used by TIE fighters in the Star Wars saga. TIE stands for “Twin Ion Engine” which propelled a deep space probe launched by NASA in 1999.
THE SUN
  • More than 1000 earths would fit inside Jupiter.
  • All the other planets in the solar system would also fit inside Jupiter twice.
  • Gravity is caused by a warping of space and time.
  • Time has not always existed. According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, before the Big Bang, everything, including time, was packed together into an extremely tiny dot.
  • “Ten elite brains” is an anagram of Albert Einstein.

07-17-2016 Journal – Beach Day!   Leave a comment

My better-half was able to sneak away from work a little early yesterday making it possible for us to make our first visit this summer to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, the ultimate tourist trap.  The weather was sweltering at our house but when we arrived at OOB there was a beautiful ocean breeze that was grand. The beach looked beautiful and it was loaded with visiting tourists.

The only place to stay cool for a few hours.

I love just walking around and people watching when I stumbled on this young lady wearing the required bikini I always look for. It was too bad she decided to stay buried in the sand.

What’s a trip to the beach without our mandatory visit to the Surf 6 bar. It’s located directly adjacent to the beach just a hop, skip, and jump from the water. I should also mention the excellent mojitos and margaritas that are available.  As always laced with some excellent Patron tequila. OLE!

We took a nice walk along the beach just as the sun was setting. The cool water felt damn good our poor overheated and sweaty feet.  It was heaven.

All in all it was a lot of fun and we are planning more of these outings over the next month. The food was delicious, the water was cool, the drinks were icy cold, and the people watching was the best.

SUMMER WILL CONTINUE

08-20-2014 Journal Entry–Dangerous Stupidity!   Leave a comment

thJGFEOQ6N

Today has suddenly become a day of rest.  It wasn’t planned this way but I’m nothing if not flexible when it comes to loafing.  My better-half is gone to work, the cat is snoring at the bottom of the bed, and I’m watching an old rerun of Unsolved Mysteries while I type.  I had a bit of a scare yesterday so I’m relaxing today and trying to recuperate.  And of course it was a case of sheer stupidity on my part.

I awoke yesterday, had a cup of coffee, and then immediately headed for the treadmill for forty minutes of fun and torture.  That workout is fairly intense and I’m usually soaked and exhausted after I’ve finished.  I then took a short ride to Lowe’s to see my girl and to buy some supplies for what I hoped would be my last project of the summer.  I purchased 25 gallon of driveway sealer and returned home intending to store the cans and to do the job another day.

During the ride home I kept thinking about the project and convinced myself I could get it done today. The weather was in the eighties and the sun was beating down. The perfect day for this type of project I thought.  I swept the driveway, changed my clothes, and got to it.

In my bicycling days I was always told to avoid dehydration, "drink when your not thirsty".  One one occasion I fell from my bike during a 100 mile ride because I hadn’t consumed enough water. I ended up in a clinic being treated after almost passing out. Did I follow that hydration rule today? Of course not! I was in a hurry to get the job completed so I started immediately without drinking anything.

An hour later I’m still at it, my clothes are soaking wet, and all of a sudden my legs gave out forcing me to sit in the yard for a few minutes to catch my breath. I knew what was happening so I slowly made my way into the house for water.  I drank two bottles of water and sat for a bit to cool off. I should have stopped at that point but the job was only half done and I wanted to finish.  I returned to it after putting on a hat and drinking another bottle of water.

Another half hour goes by and I find myself so weak I can barely stand. I sat down right where I was and couldn’t get up.  It took almost five minutes before I had the strength to move and return to the house.  More water and rest which didn’t help all that much. I knew I only had about ten more minutes of work to finish the job and decided to just do it, regardless of how I was feeling. That was stupid mistake number three.  I finished the job and barely had enough strength to return to the house. I took a cold shower and drank more water but felt no better.

For the rest of the day and well into the night I wasn’t myself.  I couldn’t focus on any one thing and had lost my appetite completely.  I also slept badly during the night but it seems this morning I’m pretty much back to normal.  I still feel a little shaky but better.

I’m only relating this story as a warning to others not to be as stupid as I’ve been.  I could just as easily have dropped over and ended up in an ambulance rushing me to a hospital. This is from a person who knew better but said the hell with the circumstances, I can handle it.  I couldn’t. It was more than a little scary but I guess it takes absolute terror to get through to me.

Remember to hydrate before your thirsty, while your thirsty, and again after you’re no longer thirsty.  This has been my first and hopefully last health related Public Service Announcement.

Well, today was the Fourth and for a change the weather was absolutely perfect.  Ninety degrees with a slight breeze along the shore to keep things just cool enough.  We made our way to the town of Old Orchid Beach late in the morning and found the place already jammed with tourists.  The beach was packed with thousands of people and if the car license plates we saw were accurate most of Massachusetts and Quebec had moved in for the holiday weekend.

The local business people decided to start early gouging as many visitors as possible with a new and higher parking lot charge, $25.00 for the day.  Since last year the cost was between $10.00 and $15.00 we decided to find a parking spot in town on the street and to feed the parking meters.  A huge pain in the ass but at the end of the day we saved about $15.00.  Luckily we found a spot only two blocks from the beach so our walk wasn’t too bad.

We dropped our blanket under the Pier out of the sun and started snapping pictures in between trips into the water to cool off.  We’ve been coming here for years and it was as crowded as we’ve ever seen it.  After an hour or so we decided a meal or snack was in order. We trekked back to the car and did a quick strip tease on the street to change out our wet clothes.  Thankfully the foot traffic in the area was light so my better-half’s rear half didn’t scare anyone too badly.

We ended up sitting on the shaded deck of the Surf 6 Club for a few refreshing drinks and a nosh of onion rings and chicken fingers.  We met a few visiting tourists and were able to chat and have a great time.  The band started playing at eleven am and were pretty good. They were playing not only for the customers of the club but for the hundreds of people nearby on the beach.

The OOB Pier extends out into the ocean for at lease three hundred yards and is covered with small shops and eating establishments.  We worked our way to the end of the Pier for a a quick drink at the “Pier” bar and to take a few more photos of the beach goers from a different angle. The place was packed with tourists and  everyone seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere and the dozens of bikini wearing female customers.  We stayed only a half hour because we had to go and to feed the parking meter.

Next was the better-half’s favorite thing, shopping.  We started hitting the shops to look through the tons of touristy junk with really unbelievably high prices. She was forced by her shopping addiction to make a few purchases and then we were off to the Arcade.  She kicked my ass playing Air Hockey and followed her victory with a little Skee-Ball. We then strolled over to the amusement park.

We agreed that the cost for tickets on the rides was ridiculous so we took lots of photographs and just walked around enjoying the atmosphere.  We hit a few more  of the smaller shops in town as we made our way back to the car. The nicest part of these visits is that we live only seven or eight miles away and we returned home in short order.

Lounging on our deck and enjoying the cool breeze and a cooler drink was a perfect ending to a great day.  The better-half just couldn’t stop herself from peppering the yard with firecrackers and Roman Candles.  That was her extremely loud way to celebrate the country’s birthday. I was also pleased to see so many of the people in town and at the beach wearing red, white, and blue swim suits, head ware, t-shirts, and beach equipment.  The meaning of the holiday wasn’t lost on most of us and that was nice to see.

We both hope your day was as nice as ours. Happy Birthday America!
