11/02/2021 PEOPLE .👨‍🦰. PEOPLE .👸. PEOPLE   2 comments

Like everyone else I spend an inordinate amount of my time people watching, listening, and wondering. We all do it and most of us find it enjoyable but even those that don’t do find it interesting and curious. As I surf the Net I’ve read thousands of articles that center most of their interests on people. Looking at it from my perspective, what else is there to write about that will capture an audience. People are by far the most interesting and disturbing characters to examine that I’ve found. Dogs? No way, Cats? Not so much, Trees? Boring . . .

Once I made the decision to write primarily about people is when I stumbled upon reams and reams of information that I found cute, somewhat interesting, and some that were just down-right stupid. With that in mind I thought I’d send along a few facts to amuse and inform you.

  • 40% of all people who come to a party in your home snoop in your medicine cabinet. (Remember this when you throw your next party)
  • Every day 200 million couples make love, 400,000 babies are born, and 140,000 people die. (Our three main interests)
  • Over the same period of time, women who read romance novels tend to have twice as many lovers as those who don’t. (Romance novels = motivation)
  • The frequency with which a woman has orgasms during her sleep actually increases as she ages during her childbearing years. (Is it any wonder they think they can do without man completely)
  • Mothers pregnant with boys are less forgetful than those carrying girls. (I don’t know what to make of this tidbit)
  • Girls have more taste buds than boys. (I can go off-color here but I won’t)

As I’ve stated many times before I want to meet the people who research these odd bits of information just out of sheer curiosity. I’d like to know if these facts are really as accurate as they say. I also want to submit my resume to them for their next job opening. This would have to be the best freaking job on the planet and I want in.

THE GREAT WIDE WONDERFUL WORLD OF PEOPLE

Our vacation began to wind down a little as we entered our fourth day in NO. We decided to spend the final day and a half just roaming around the French Quarter and shopping, people watching, drinking, and eating.  It was a dirty job but someone had to do it.

My first suggestion to my better-half was a required visit to a NO must-see, Pat O’Brien’s Bar.  During my first visit to NO many many years ago I was taken first to Bourbon Street and then directly to Pat O’Brien’s Bar.  I loved the place so much I couldn’t wait to introduce it to my better-half.

It’s a nondescript hole-in-the-wall or so you think at first glance. You walk through the entry way into a dark tunnel with a barroom on either side.  That leads directly into the terrace filled with tropical plants and tables for patrons.

dscn0756bb

Directly in the middle is a fountain that is somewhat famous.  During the day it doesn’t look like much but at night it’s on fire.

It was difficult trying to capture the rising flames in a photo. This was my best attempt.

We took a seat in the bar and ordered dinner. Since O’Brien’s is the actual home of the famous Hurricane cocktail we ordered two. They were huge as was expected and strong enough to give you a glow after drinking only one.

My entrée was something I’d been waiting for for years.  This is something the locals call “crawfish etouffee” and believe me it was the best I’ve ever had.  It was hot and spicy and effing delicious.

It was a fun night spent people watching and just enjoying the atmosphere of the French Quarter.  Vibrant, crowded, and as much fun as any person could handle.  We retired to our hotel and the secluded pool to cool down a little before bed.  Another terrific day in the Big Easy.

WE’RE REALLY GONNA MISS THIS PLACE.

07-17-2016 Journal – Beach Day!   Leave a comment

My better-half was able to sneak away from work a little early yesterday making it possible for us to make our first visit this summer to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, the ultimate tourist trap.  The weather was sweltering at our house but when we arrived at OOB there was a beautiful ocean breeze that was grand. The beach looked beautiful and it was loaded with visiting tourists.

DSCN0427

The only place to stay cool for a few hours.

I love just walking around and people watching when I stumbled on this young lady wearing the required bikini I always look for. It was too bad she decided to stay buried in the sand.

DSCN0428

What’s a trip to the beach without our mandatory visit to the Surf 6 bar. It’s located directly adjacent to the beach just a hop, skip, and jump from the water. I should also mention the excellent mojitos and margaritas that are available.  As always laced with some excellent Patron tequila. OLE!

DSCN0435

We took a nice walk along the beach just as the sun was setting. The cool water felt damn good our poor overheated and sweaty feet.  It was heaven.

  DSCN0448

All in all it was a lot of fun and we are planning more of these outings over the next month. The food was delicious, the water was cool, the drinks were icy cold, and the people watching was the best.

SUMMER WILL CONTINUE

What better way to start off the new year than to update and revise my list of the one hundred things I love. Everything changes over time and the Things I Love list has evolved as well.

As I reviewed my original list of the one hundred Things I Love,  it became painfully obvious that it no longer was accurate and badly needed updating. Initially I did the list with my tongue firmly lodged in my cheek but this newly revised list has been shortened to include only the 60 most important things as they are currently.    Here goes nothing.

06-05-2015 Journal–A Day in Portsmouth!   Leave a comment

Last Wednesday was a day we don’t often have.  My better-half and I were able to combine some semi-decent weather with one of her rare days off. We decided to start our day in Portsmouth, NH where we could shop a little, enjoy people watching, and take a few updated photographs of the waterfront and harbor.

Even though the weather wasn’t perfect (cloudy and chilly) we still enjoyed roaming around Old Town.  The shops there are as diverse as they can possibly be making the visits much more interesting.  Jewelry, clothing, trinkets, and of course food.  We did our best to sample and purchase a little of everything.

The older part of town is filled with many interesting buildings that have been repurposed many times over the years. Lots of college and high school students filling the streets to make things even more interesting.  I have to say that the new fad of coloring one’s hair a vibrant blue doesn’t do much for me but I’m acquiring a real appreciation for the women’s new obsession with tights. OMFG!

After walking around town for a few hours I found something interesting. It was a building decoration which captured completely the message my feet were sending to me.

We ended the day with a stop at the Red Hook Brewery for a light lunch and then a tour of the facility.  It never hurts to learn a little more about beer making and those free beer samples didn’t hurt either. While I’m not much of a beer drinker it’s nice to have an occasional beer buzz that early in the day. We departed the Portsmouth area for a leisurely ride up the coast to one of out favorite places, Kennebunkport.  I’ll save that part of the trip for my next posting.

All in all we had a very nice day.

06-15-2014 Journal Entry–Father’s Day!   Leave a comment

Another Father’s Day has come and gone.  It  was great day primarily due to my better-half.  I was able to spend an hour or so early in the AM finishing my project for my man-cave.  It’s now complete and after drying for one more day it’ll be moved into the cave once and for all.

“The Finished Product”

We initially decided to fire up the grill for a meal of corn-on-the-cob, steaks, and a fresh garden salad.  The garden is growing so fast that I actually ate my first radishes yesterday.  Take a look.

DSC_0013

DSC_0012

All of the recent rainfall has accelerated the growth of almost everything.  I especially love the bright green colors and the lushness of the garden at this time of the year.

Now, let’s get back to my Father’s Day celebration.  My better-half and I after a few cold and refreshing alcoholic beverages decided to cancel the home cooked meal and head for Old Orchard Beach, a local tourist trap and amusement park.  She was in deep withdrawal due to a lack of greasy chicken wings and I was looking forward to some good old amusement park junk food.  To hell with the weight loss program for this night.

DSC_0051

DSC_0042

The place wasn’t overly crowded but the tourists had definitely arrived in force.  People watching in the park and a walk along the beach gave me my first “big butt” beach picture of the season.

DSC_0054

I was really hungry so as the better-half waited for her chicken wing order at the Chinese hole-in-the-wall I discovered a new entry into the food competition right next door. Lo and behold a Mexican food stand had magically appeared and I was drawn to it like a gigantic black bean craving magnet.  My black bean and rice addiction kicked in and I was hooked.

DSC_0055

Three tacos covered with jalapeno vinaigrette and hot sauce were just what the doctor ordered.  I threw in a fresh fruit cup for good measure and to help ease my guilty diet-conscience.  The food was excellent and fresh but suffered from tourist pricing.  No big surprise there.

DSC_0048

Not too bad for amusement park food.  We snapped a few pictures and did some window shopping and people watching.   All in all it was a great night filled with good food and better company.  Happy Father’s Day to me.  I saw this shirt and I almost bought it.  If it’s still there on my next trip I might be forced to make the purchase and regift it to a certain friend.

07-24-2013   3 comments

Yesterday I was out and about running errands and enjoying the sunshine and cooler weather.  It was a perfect day to people watch and I dedicated a large portion of my time to doing just that.

It always amazes me just how much interaction with others occurs while waiting in line at register checkouts. For  me these checkouts seems to have taken the place of those good old water cooler conversations of the past.  Being in line forces us to allow others into our private zone where conversation and observation are almost unavoidable.  Normally this circumstance is a pain in the butt but yesterday it was a little different.

The store was jammed with people.  Tourists as always were underfoot and it seemed like every household in the state  had family members grocery shopping.  Kids were running around, people chatting in the aisles, and a general air of enjoyment which I thought was a little unusual.  As I stood in the checkout line the women directly in front of me was placing her purchases on the counter while her daughter (2 or 3 years old) sat quietly in the shopping cart.  She was sitting there in her cute little dress and she was people watching as well.  Young babies are notorious for flirting and this little girl was no different.   She was looking around and smilingly at everyone while she waited patiently for her Mom to checkout.

For some reason she turned quickly around and began to stare at me.  I looked back and smiled but she just continued staring.  She seemed fascinated by my mustache and started feeling her own upper lip with her finger. All of a sudden she began to laugh.  You know that kind of infectious laugh that seems to move from person to person in a group and eventually everyone is howling.  This tiny little girl couldn’t stop laughing.  I know I can be funny looking but she just laughed loud and long and before I realized it everyone in our line and the adjoining lines were laughing as well. The more we laughed the more she laughed and I have to say it was one of the more pleasant moments I’ve experienced in many months.  More than a few of us in the general vicinity were laughing so hard we were crying.  As her mother pushed their cart away that little sweetheart was waving and laughing all the way out the door.  Everyone was waving back and smiling and as she disappeared from sight we began talking together about how cute she was.

It was like the earth stood still for just a moment and all our defenses had evaporated.  We came together as a group and shared a special moment. I’m sure that many of the people standing near that child will remember that  experience for a very long time, I know I will.

At what age do we lose that child-like wonder that made that little lady so damn innocent and real.  An emotional genuineness we could all use a great deal more of.  A person could change the world forever if he or she could find a way to bottle and sell that.  I hope that little girl holds onto that honesty and sincerity for many years to come but  I suspect that won’t be the case. After she’s been exposed to the realities of life for a few years she’s sure to becomes more jaded and politically correct and I feel bad for her already.

For a moment she was a bright light that created a special moment in time that our select group of people was lucky enough to witness and be a part of. Every time I think I about it I can’t help but smile again.
