I’ve been hearing weather rumors that we might be getting a few days of warmer temperatures.  I hope it’s true because being housebound is starting to make me crazier than usual. My better-half and I have been out a few times just to run errands but it’s been too cold to take those long walks on the beach or in the woods that we like so much.

After just a few weeks of freezing temps the house is already covered in ice and the build-up on the eaves has begun.  If we’re lucky this warm-up might just be enough to get the ice melting and dropping to the ground. As you can see by these photo’s there is ice hanging everywhere.

The snow hasn’t melted off much yet and a few inches still remain.  From the amount of tracks in our backyard there appears to be quite an assortment of wildlife roaming around after dark. Some of the tracks are a little unusual making me wonder exactly what I’ve been missing.  Maybe we have a Bigfoot or two hiding in the woods or just one helluva big dog, bear, or deer. Who knows?

If the weather gods agree I  hope to get back into the woods for a few hours this week.  Since the snow is only a few inches deep it won’t be necessary to unpack the snow shoes from storage. There always seems to be plenty of interesting things to photograph at this time of the year and some hearty wildlife to chase around for an hour or two.

We’re about three months from getting back outside to begin some of the garden preparations prior to planting. This winter has sped by so fast and Spring will be here before we know it. Then it will be back to work.

CAN’T WAIT!

It’s Cyber Monday and I just finished renewing and deleting the fifty spam emails I received overnight.  I’ve experienced aggressive retailing before but nothing like this year. I’d like to thank Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Walmart, and many others for totally attempting to take over my email accounts. In appreciation I thought I’d let you know that as of tomorrow I’ll be unsubscribing from all of you because this is verging on harassment and I need to put a stop to it.  Merry effing Christmas folks.

Rather than spending time with my better-half at the mall, we’ve decided to spend her day off today driving from town to town to visit many of the smaller mom-and-pop gift shops and hoping to find a few small gifts for a few remaining family members. I might even spring for a nice lunch somewhere in the York Beach area near Portsmouth.

The weather forecasts for later in the week call for rain and rain and then more rain. If we’re going to do this shopping it has to be today or we’ll be out of luck. I’d like to get a few photos along the coast if we can but who knows, we may not get any sunshine today at all.

The time seems to be flying by and Christmas will be arriving all too quickly. We intend to enjoy this warm Indian Winter weather while it lasts. I’m afraid when it ends it won’t be pretty. I have visions of snow drifts and really icy roads very very soon.  I’d like to have a white Christmas but not too white.

The grand kids came to visit over the weekend and it’s always good to see them and their parents. We kicked back and relaxed with a somewhat friendly game of Super Scrabble.

For those of you who aren’t Scrabble fanatics it’s an enlarged standard Scrabble board with more tiles and Quadruple word and letter squares. It was great fun even though I got my ass thoroughly kicked by everyone.  Fun but quite humbling for someone as competitive as I am. I guess there’s always the next time to return the favor.

More decorating tonight and I hope to put the finishing touches on the tree. That really brings the Christmas spirit alive for me like nothing else.

24 SHOPPING DAYS TIL CHRISTMAS

The cat and I have been reduced to bachelor status since my better-half flew off to Delaware until next Tuesday.  She had a death in her family and had to  to drop everything quickly and catch a flight.  I dropped her at the airport in a freaking blizzard and returned home. Three hours later she was still in the plane sitting on the runway waiting for it to be deiced.  Just hearing that made my palms a little sweaty. That late start insured she’d miss her connector in Newark and be forced to stay the night at one of New Jersey’s finer motels. Anything that an airlines agrees to pay for will almost certainly be on the lower end of the luxury scale.  She eventually made it to Baltimore the following day as a much more experienced traveler than when she left.

I woke up yesterday to a little more snow but it didn’t upset me at all. I tried to get a good nights sleep but the cat was being a huge pain in the ass.  He was upset that my better-half wasn’t there and kept getting up when he heard noises thinking she had come home.  It drove me a little crazy and around 3 am after a few minutes of rude name calling I  locked him out of the bedroom. It truly is a miracle that he’s lived as long as he has because I’ve wanted to kill him on numerous occasions and last night was one of them. He’s definitely used up all of his nine lives by now so he’d better be careful in the future.

Today I thawed out a large container of my four alarm, OMFG chili and choked it down while watching TV and working on the computer.  I’ve been doing everything possible to convince Windows 8.1 to accept an old computer game from 1995 so I can play it once again.  It’s my all time favorite simulation and Hooray, Hooray, I finally got it working.  The game is called Pharaoh with an add-on called Cleopatra.  It’s still good after all these years and tomorrow I’ll be spending a good part of the day having some fun with it.

The cat has calmed down a little so tonight should be a little quieter. With any luck I’ll be able to get out with my camera tomorrow and commune with good old Mother Nature for a while.  I’d like to get another collection of really good snow photos before winter suddenly comes to an end.

My better-half should be returning on Tuesday after the funeral and I’ll sure be happy about that.

One of the biggest problems with this extremely cold weather is not getting to spend much time outside the house.  I’m able to run outside for short periods but anything longer than a few minutes is problematic.  Even my unheated workshop in the garage  is impossible to spend more than a few minutes in and I’m too cheap to pay for a space heater and gallons of kerosene.  The first week of this cold was bearable but each day that goes by without relief I become more and more antsy.

I ran out of patience yesterday and decided to grab my better-half, my camera, and just go somewhere.  As long as the car’s heater continued to work we’d be just fine.

I’ve been wondering during the last few days how in the hell the wild animals survive this kind of weather.  I’m sure that many don’t but it’s amazing that any actually survive it at all. I noticed this morning that my house is being circled by a flock of birds which I haven’t been able to identify.  It’s like a scene from Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds”. They seem to be interested in the suet we have near the other feeders but they’re beginning to make me nervous.  Prior to their arrival we hadn’t seen much activity at all except for a few chickadees and those annoying woodpeckers.

During our foray into the ice and snow we took a ride through the Dayton area which is loaded with horse farms.  I was surprised to see quite a few horses out in the corrals wearing their coats and getting a little much needed exercise.

Normally anytime we approach horses they walk right over to check us out. They’re always curious and looking for apples, carrots, or sugar cubes.  Not today though.  They were just as cold and miserable as we were.  They appreciated the exercise but headed for the barn every few minutes to warm up a little.

Well it’s time to head back home for more reading and TV.  I miss the occasional walk on the beach even during the winter.  The current wind chill makes even that uncomfortable.  Hopefully we’ll see some warmer temperatures next week even if it’s only somewhere near thirty degrees.
