If you read this blog then you know I’m not a proponent of organized religion.  I’m trying to keep from going into a major rant on religion because I’ve done it too may times before.  You also know that I love to read and love to roam around the Internet to keep up with  things as best I can.

As I was doing that yesterday I discovered a few sites offering letters written to God by children of all ages.  The letters were  for the most part typical of young kids writing to almost anyone like Santa, the President, their Parents, and others.  In the corner of one page I noticed a link to access a letter from God.

This intrigued me so I decided to check it out.  It was a long and boring essay from God knows who that was made available for parents to use.  You filled in a number of blanks with the kids information which then merged with the document and printed out a completed letter specifically to that child from God.  I thought to myself, “Who would do something like this to their child”.  Scaring the hell out of a young kid with tales of a wrathful God demanding prayers makes me very uncomfortable.  I wonder how many of the world’s Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist children were given similar letters or stories passed down through generations.  I’m all for a good and wholesome religious message to kids but frightening them with tall tales is more than a little scary.

I was raised Catholic and part of my childhood education into religion was being told many things that disturbed me then and still do.  I have issues with any religion that insists they are the only path to follow and will do almost anything to insure their flock stays loyal.  Propagandizing kids has been done for generations and look where we’ve ended up.  Some of the worst wars and mass killings throughout history were done in the name of religion, not your God but their God.

I continued looking around and found the following letter.  It’s a multi-level guilt trip for your children that is intended to force them to pray.  I guess most of the worlds largest religions use the same playbook for maintaining control.  One of the most effective things is convincing the kids by any means necessary not to think for themselves but to obey the dictates of their church.

Here’s the letter.  Would you send this to your children?

Hi,
As you got up this morning, I watched you and hoped you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words, asking my opinion or thanking me for something good that happened in your life yesterday – but I noticed you were too busy trying to find the right outfit to put on and wear to work.

I waited again. When you ran around the house getting ready I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say hello, but you were too busy. At one point you had to wait fifteen minutes with nothing to do except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring to your feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me but you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip.

I watched as you went to work and I waited patiently all day long. With all your activities I guess you were too busy to say anything to me. I noticed that before lunch you looked around, maybe you felt embarrassed to talk to me, that is why you didn’t bow your head.

You glanced three or four tables over and you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn’t. That’s okay. There is still more time left, and I have hope that you will talk to me…yet you went home and it seems as if you had lots of things to do. After a few of them were done you turned on the TV,

I don’t know if you like TV or not, just about anything goes there and you spent a lot of time each day in front of it, not thinking about anything – just enjoying the show. I waited patiently again as you watched the TV and ate your meal… but again you didn’t talk to me.

Bedtime – I guess you felt too tired. After you said goodnight to your family you plopped into bed and fell asleep in no time.

That’s okay because you may not realize that I am always there for you. I’ve got patience more than you will ever know. I even want to teach you how to be patient with others as well. I love you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayer or thought or a thankful part of your heart. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation.

Well you are getting up again and once again I will wait with nothing but love for you hoping that today you will give me some time.

Have a nice day!
Your friend,
GOD

P.S. Do you have enough time to send this to another person?

I have many other things to say on this subject but I’ll save them for another time.

Each morning I try to write the drafts of my blog postings while relaxing in bed and at the same time keeping up with current events on TV. One thing that irritates me even more than the never-ending infomercials for products is the never-ending religious infomercials by a bunch so called preachers. How stupid do you have to be to believe that someone requires a half-hour long infomercial to save your soul.  It’s for the effing money you fools.

Over the years and after a great deal of collecting and reading all types of information I’ve come to the conclusion that organized religion as we know it hasn’t convinced me of anything except to remain totally skeptical.  To quote a comedian with a wicked sense of humor, "I have no problem with a universal deity but I do have a problem believing in one that takes attendance".  It’s nothing more than an attempt to be funny but it’s simple thoughts like that that cause a person like me to think.

I’ve tried for many years to read as much about as many religions as I could and gotten nowhere fast.  The mere fact that there are so many religions bothers me the most.  It’s my opinion and belief that if there is only one God, with one basic message, then there should only be one religion.  Man-made religions with miracles and visions and other assorted nonsense leave me cold.  They continue to be more a source of amusement for me than anything I can take too seriously.  That being said, I am a big believer in the natural order of things.  Science is not a religion to me but scientific studies have convinced me that the natural order of all things will remain as fact long after most religions have crumbled into dust and been forgotten.

One thing that sticks with me throughout all of my attempts to believe in something supernatural or godlike is the term "karma". As stated by Isaac Newton’s Third Law, "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction".  It’s simple and basic and believable. You can call it "karma" or use any term you’d like.  The term isn’t important but the facts of the matter will always remain constant. I’d like to believe that in the grand scheme of things there is a power that helps maintain a balance in all things. It just the old and overused biblical quote of "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" taken to it’s logical conclusion.  You treat me well and I’ll return the favor. If you do good, it will come back to you ten fold and as a balance if you do evil it will revisit you as well.

Two of my favorite sayings have always been; "what goes around, comes around" and "always do the right thing, no matter the consequences".  To me they seem to say the same basic thing.  It’s not a religion but good old common sense.  Do we really need every common sense thing reiterated and interpreted by human prophets who are no more intelligent than most of us already are? I think not.  As in everything else, when humans get involved things get twisted, misinterpreted, and turned into issues of money, power and control.

I try to live my life with my own self-imposed laws of proper behavior without having things dictated to me by other humans claiming they were chosen to deliver these messages by a higher power.  I find that offensive and I chose to go my own way.  My laws will always be the same, they will never change, or be misinterpreted.  When the day comes when I have to answer for my life and my actions, I’ll be ready. Will they?

Everyone these days is constantly harping for me to partake of this festival celebrating the birth of Christ.  Just to let most of you know, I’m what I would call a recovering Catholic.  I was baptized and confirmed against my will at a young age but was able to distance myself over the next few decades. I feel I’ve gained a better perspective of things and since I’ve never rejoined the church you may consider me a righteous religious independent.

That explains my position towards organized religion and the related holidays they claim as their own. In an attempt to be fair I decided to do a little research into Christmas to determine if it was the actual birthday of Jesus Christ.  It didn’t take terribly long to find out that December 25th is not the correct date of the birth but one selected by the Catholic Church to compete with certain other pagan celebrations that also took place in December. As best I could determine the actual season of Jesus’s birth was thought to be sometime in the spring. The church in its infinite wisdom took the same approach to scheduling that holiday as they do in handling everything else. They make it church doctrine regardless of the facts and their billions of believers follow right along.

In the early years of the American colonies, Christmas was considered a pagan festival and wasn’t too well received by the colonists. There was even a time between 1659 and 1681 in Massachusetts where anyone caught celebrating Christmas would be fined five shillings. Our current war on Christmas and religion led by our socialist friends at the ACLU pales in comparison to that carried on by our colonist forefathers.

I think my problem of developing a true Christmas spirit has finally been solved. I dislike the materialistic style of Christmas that many people celebrate these days and I’ve always disliked anything forced on me by any organized religion but the pagan holidays I think I can get on board with.

I’d make a great pagan. I love really big bonfires, and long’s slinky robes, and even the occasional orgy or two.  Say what you want about those pagans, they really know how to party. I’m sure there are many pagans in this country who maintain a really low profile due to all of the hateful and discriminatory things said about them over the years by the Christians. I truly feel their pain and  still don’t understand why “we all can’t just get along”. Special thanks to Rodney King for that quote, he was always my hero and role model.

So take heart all you pagans, stand up, be recognized, and be proud of your rich heritage. I think next year I’m going to start a campaign for the creation of a new holiday where all of those people who feel disenfranchised by their organized religions can jump on board my pagan bandwagon. We’ll have Christmas trees but just so we can set them on fire because everyone knows it’s no fun to dance and frolic naked in the dark.  I also hear that dancing naked around bonfires in December can be a bit hazardous.  The pagans report a huge increase in frostbite occurrences during the holidays, so be careful out there.

I’m starting to get that old tingle of holiday cheer again. You just never know when you’re going stumble into a genuine religious epiphany.  It’s a freaking Christmas miracle and I’ve been saved.
