01-13-2016 Journal – Snowblowing & Shopping!   Leave a comment

I went to bed last night with expectations of a light snow fall and awoke this morning with almost five inches of the white stuff clogging my driveway. And a special thanks goes out to the Saco snowplow driver for missing my mailbox and then filling my driveway with eight inches of snow.  So instead of a quiet morning lounging in bed I was forced to brave the cold and snow to clear the damn driveway. How could my better-half possibly survive if she couldn’t get out to shop sometime today?

This was my morning wake up call.

The snow made for interesting pictures as it stuck to each and every tree branch we could see. I snapped a few photos with my point-and-shoot camera but by the time I got around to getting my Nikon ready the snow was already dropping from the trees.  Here are a few substandard pics to give you some idea of what I’m talking about.

The rest of the day was spent running errands and generally just screwing around. She enjoyed her day off and I enjoyed getting out of the house for a while.  More snow in the forecast for the weekend so we’ve got to enjoy the time out when we can.

I’m sorry for the short post but other responsibilities need tending to. More to follow soon.

02-07-2015 Journal–Happy B-Day Ron!   Leave a comment

Before I start my post for today I thought I’d celebrate for just a moment the 104th birthday of one of my favorite people, Ronald Wilson Reagan, our fortieth president.  Things have certainly gone downhill since he left the presidency and he is sorely missed.  Happy Birthday Mr. President!

My convalescence continues today after my colonoscopy. I was told to take it easy for a few days and I tend to listen closely to doctors who tell me to do things I enjoy doing. So a lazy day for catching up on emails, writing a little, and loafing a lot.  We’ve been given a one day reprieve by the weather gods with no snow anticipated.  Starting tomorrow we’re being warned of another damn snowstorm preparing to drop a foot or more of snow on us.  We already have so much snow we’re running out of places to put it.  These pictures were taken in the city of Biddeford, Maine yesterday and as you can see another foot of snow will make walking around town a real chore.

Our family group braved the cold weather last night and thoroughly enjoyed a meal at Famous Dave’s.  There were ribs, brisket, and sauces all around.  I’d been jonesing for catfish for the last two weeks and it was well worth the wait.  The grandson munched on his favorite meal of Mac and Cheese, pineapple chunks, and a few Oreo cookies. Top that off with a glass of chocolate milk and he was in hog heaven.   It was a great evening out even though the temps were near zero and the wind-chill even worse.

Our visitor from Los Angeles, my better-half’s oldest son, flies out today to return to the left coast.  He was greeted here by more snow than he’s seen for many years.  He’ll appreciate that California weather a lot more I’m sure.

Well the weekend has passed without much of interest to talk about.  I have to tell you though that taking Sundays off from my life is something I recommend highly for anyone to try.  No exercising, no blogging and no dieting. As always I remind you that Sunday as a day of rest for me is not a religious leftover from my childhood.  It just happens to fit into my strangely scheduled current  lifestyle.

We had another eight inches of snow through the night which meant I was to spend at least a half hour with my favorite motorized friend, the snowblower.  The snow was wet and heavy and a real pain in the ass to deal with.  I did it quickly so my better-half could access the outside world and then I returned to my day-off.  I snapped a few pictures around the house of this storm because the snow was sticking to everything and made for some interesting photos.

The weather has warmed a little which brings out the visiting birds in large numbers.  We feed them regularly but in frigid weather they become scarce. Since we live in a forested area we have three or four generations of woodpeckers that stay with us all winter.  We place suet out for them because they’re the most successful in pecking it apart when it’s frozen.

They’ve been flying in and out in shifts so often they’re averaging one suet container a week.  It apparently keeps them healthy and makes living through the winter months a little easier.

I then decided to leave the warm bosom of my house to explore the neighboring area for a few photo’s of the snow scenes.  Here are three that should give you a better idea about what Maine is like in winter.

It’s now Monday morning and I’m back on the treadmill for a mile or two of good heath and exhaustion.  The better-half’s loving the new slimmer me but I think it’s just her way of motivating me a little more.  Either way  it’s a win/win.

After yesterday’s serious posting I decided to lighten things up a bit today.  We snow bunnies here in Maine are celebrating again as we await yet another two feet of snow to play in. I’ve spent most of today with my new best friend, my snow blower, and we’ve been out doing our thing four times already. It’s a real bitch since this snow is extremely heavy and wet making everything doubly difficult.  If I don’t continue to keep up with the snowfall then tomorrow when the temperature dips low again I’ll be up to my butt in ice.

My better-half has apparently lost what little was left of her mind.  She’s been out in the snow all day running, jumping, and just being crazy.  I fear she may have a serious snow fetish that I was not previously aware of. I gave up years ago trying to calm her down when she gets like this so I just stand back and take lots of pictures.  They’re perfect for future blackmailing purposes and you can bet I’ll use them to my best advantage. I’m surprised she hasn’t again suggested making naked snow angels as she’s done in the past. In order for me to be tempted to do that I’d need a lot more alcohol which would in turn would make me especially dangerous with that snow blower.  So I’ll pass this time and make sure I get really clear pictures if she decides to get that nuts.

Her one big wish today was to build a freaking snowman in the front yard.  Since I wasn’t permitted to give it a nice set of breasts I refused to participate.  Being the shy person she is she initiated a conversation with some guy in a pickup truck who was plowing the neighbors driveway who then stopped to look at the snowman.  She complained she had no carrot for the snowman’s nose and it really wouldn’t be complete without one.  The guy turned his truck around and drove away in the middle of the storm and returned fifteen minutes later, rolled down his window, and handed her a carrot, and then drove away. All in all a pretty cool move.

I suppose I’ll be out with the snow blower at least one more time before calling it a night.  I suspect she’ll require me to sit in front of the television tonight with her to watch all of the red carpet hoopla before the Oscar ceremony.  Thank God she works early in the morning and will probably go to bed early so I can turn it off.  Watching Hollywood celebrities for me is much like having your wisdom teeth pulled with a pair of pliers and no Novocain.

It’s time for a quiet dinner and a glass of brandy or two and then to bed to read a few chapters.  The storm should be over before morning and I hope we get a reprieve from the weather for a few days before the next one rolls in.
