Time for a journal entry and to play a little catch-up with what’s happening in my boring life.  First things first; it’s freaking hot, second; it’s freaking humid, and thirdly; I’m freaking sweating my ass off.  There, I don’t feel any cooler or any better but it just felt good to bitch at someone other than my better-half. She’s has that “I’m going to kill you if you whine about the heat just one more time”, look in her eyes.  Truthfully she can be a little scary when provoked.

I decided to live in Maine for a number of reasons.  I dislike hot weather and I thought by moving here I could escape the worst of it.  Well that dream ended this year.  I might as well be living in Florida, Arizona, or even freaking Death Valley.  I think it’s time for the better-half and me to consider moving north a few hundred miles where it’s a bit cooler.  The downside to that is we’d be living in Canada.  That’s almost as bad as living where it’s too hot.  In my humble opinion Canada sucks both politically and personally.  That should piss a few people off but I don’t really care, it’s to hot to give a damn.

I started out a few days ago to get into the woods to try out my new 24.5 megapixel Nikon camera.  I lasted about as long as it took me to drive to the area.  I would have looked silly with my camera and other equipment pulling a little red wagon behind me filled with bottles of water.  Just too effing hot.

The all knowing and all seeing weather forecasters are predicting a break in the heat sometime before I die.  I try never to believe them because they seem to be more wrong than right.  We had a short period last night of actual real wind.  I went out on the deck to enjoy the breeze and found out something else entirely.  Black flies apparently love a cool breeze too.  Between them and the mosquitos I was screwed.  I retreated back into the gigantic oven we call our home and turned on every ceiling fan I could find.  It was like trying to watch TV while sitting on an airport runway.

So I’ve bitched and complained as much as I care to about the weather.  It’s time to return to my life and the birthday party due to start in an hour.  I’m doing all the cooking on a nice hot grill.  I just can’t get a break.

Before I go I’d like to thank the new followers of this blog.  I hope you others visit their sites and enjoy their blogs as much as I do.  Thank you all:

It’s been a few weeks since I slipped back into journal mode but with the summer beginning I thought I should catch up a little.  It’s been raining off and on for more than a week forcing us to be house-bound once again.  With all of this rain the garden is flourishing and beginning to look like my own personal jungle.

The summer plans are once again being readjusted due to family obligations by my better-half.  What I initially thought would be a quiet summer is slowly slipping away.   I shouldn’t be all that surprised since it happens more often than not.

I spent more than a little time yesterday attempting to get my chores in order.  If you garden you don’t need to be told just how important maintaining a compost pile is.  Unfortunately that magic doesn’t just happen.  It must be maintained just like anything else and this week I took steps to do just that.  There’s nothing as much fun as standing ankle deep in compost and turning the pile.  My compost consists primarily of grass clipping left to rot.  The smell is unforgettable and the larger the pile becomes the worse the smell.  With the over abundance of rain the amount of clippings being saved is huge.  I no longer have a compost pile but a compost mountain.  What a dirty but necessary job.

My cucumber wine is progressing nicely.  The aroma is rather nice but I haven’t tasted it yet.  It needs to progress a little further into the process because it would only taste like yeast at this stage.  My better-half finally put up a batch of blueberry wine which we’re both looking forward to drinking.  It seems that almost anything made with blueberries always tastes wonderful.  The blueberries also make almost anything they’re mixed with taste even better.  This Fall should be very productive for jams and jellies with the rain making for fat and luscious berries.

With the Fourth of July approaching we’re planning a couple of beach days. The weather looks as if it will be cooperating for a change so we’ll really be able to enjoy ourselves.  The better-half is insisting we make a short visit to our local amusement park to enjoy a few rides and a visit to a small kiosk that specializes in Chinese chicken wings.  She has a serious addiction to wings that hasn’t lessened over the years.  Just recently we made a trek to our favorite spot in Portland for outstanding chicken wings.  The Great Lost Bear is known for it’s hot wings and believe me they are unbelievable.  Their super hot version will almost certainly kill you but I guarantee you’ll die happy with a smile on your face.

Now that the heaviest rain storms are over and things are drying out I’ll be able to get into the woods for some head-clearing alone time.  My camera and lenses have been cleaned to within an inch of their lives and are ready for some heavy use.  I can’t wait.

So, we’ll celebrate the countries birthday this coming week as well as the life, death, and times of Thomas Jefferson.  I’m pretty sure if he were here he wouldn’t be celebrating all that much but that just my humble opinion. I’ll get back to my normal postings soon enough and I’m looking forward to an interesting summer.  I hope you are as well.

Is it just me or does this Spring not impress.  It was perfect if you like lots of rain, cool nights, and sweltering heat.  I’m not really sure what I was hoping for or expecting but for some reason I feel disappointed.  Coming out of our long winter here in Maine should have made just about anything acceptable but it didn’t seem to work for me this year.  I have to say I feel a little let down.

Now that Summer has officially arrived what can we hope for?  More sunshine would be nice, maybe some cooler weather, less humidity, and just enough rain to keep the yards and gardens healthy.  That would be the ideal Summer but as we’ve come to realize of late, we almost never get what we expect weather-wise.

Why is it that we humans are never satisfied.  All winter we moan and complain about the lack of sunshine and warmth.  We bitch about the snow, the sleet, the freezing rain, and slush that seems to cover everything.  It drives us totally crazy to be cooped up in the house getting on each others nerves for months on end.  Then all of a sudden the weather changes and what happens.  We haven’t even had enough time to put away our winter clothes before we’re already bitching about how hot it is.  We continue that silliness into late October when things start to cool down in preparation for Winter.  We can’t wait for some cooler temperatures to save us from the terrible heat.  We have one snow fall and within hours we’re whining about the cold and wishing for Spring and Summer.  It’s a conundrum I tell you.

I can only deduce that we as a species are really screwed up. We never appear completely happy or satisfied with anything,  That would help explain a divorce percentage just over fifty percent.  Maybe not, what the hell do I know.  What I do  know is that I’m just as bad as everyone else when it comes to these things and I see no hope of finding a workable solution.  Am I a little depressed, why yes I think I am.  Do I need a little help?  Why yes I think I do.   Let me think . . . . . . . . . .

Maybe I need a walk on the beach and a quick dip in the cool ocean water to wake me out of these Summer doldrums.  A few dozen scantily clad bikini wearing young ladies might be just the thing to begin my healing.  I can walk down the beach and have a few drinks at the  Surf Side, enjoy their air conditioning for a hour or so, and then return to my blanket to relax and maybe read a few chapters of my favorite book.  Another dip into the ocean and a few dozen more buxom young things prancing down the beach are beginning to make me feel a whole lot better.  Who cares about the heat?  Not me.  I’m beginning to feel rather good.

Okay, just forget everything I said in those first few paragraphs because I was in the throws of depression and was totally wrong.  I’ve suddenly rediscovered a few things that can snap me right back to normal almost immediately.  Chant this along with me!

Give me a "T", drive me an "H", give me an "O", give me an "N", and a big freaking "G". C’mon Summer!

Have you ever had something piss you off so bad that you felt a sharp, stabbing pain behind your eyes.  If you have then the following list will be perfect for you.  I love reading lists and also love writing them from time to time.   Most people are occasionally annoying but on their really bad days they make my list.  These items have started this Summer Season with a vengeance.

  • People who love to talk over me during a conversation make me want to scream.
  • The person in front of me at the 14 item express register checkout with fifty items in his cart and a bad attitude when confronted.
  • Waiting in my car at the ATM for fifteen minutes for some moron on foot makes a withdrawal.
  • The guy in the men’s room stall at Wal-mart who leaves the stall in a condition that some people (but not me) might call a real “shit hole”.
  • The attractive woman driving the gorgeous new Lexus who rolls down her window and spits a huge oyster into the passing lane. When you then look at her she resorts to giving you the dreaded “finger”.
  • People who will stand quietly in line at a movie theatre but can’t shut up once the movie starts.
  • People who have something important to tell me and then send me a four word text.
  • People who are “close talkers” with chronic “stench” breath who won’t stop talking.
  • Waiting endlessly in a register line for a customer to be trained in the use of their debit card by the cashier.
  • People who insist on telling me their child is an honor student in some BS school with a freaking bumper sticker.

I feel much better now that I’ve gotten all of these off my chest.  It’s a very cathartic experience to say the least and just might keep me from hurting myself and others.

Our fear of snow and frost has finally past and I can get on with our Spring and Summer plans.  I’ve been sun burned once already and now I’m taking extra steps to be a little more careful. With the remodel in the house completed I can now center all of my attention to the yard and garden.

I visited a friend yesterday who lives nearby and owns a small nursery.  He is a supplier of plants to many of the local and larger nurseries in southern Maine.  He’s been very helpful over the years in educating me on growing plants in this State.  I decided to shop around a little because every year he offers plants for sale that many others in the area do not.

I started looking through his new greenhouses and I couldn’t stop myself from loading up on plants.  I have a fairly large cold frame at home and I purchased enough plants to completely fill it and then some.  I filled my car with hot peppers, pickling cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and mustard plants.  It was an excellent start for the season.  I also purchased seedlings of three types of lettuce, spinach, and a couple cherry tomato plants.  I’ll be planting the cold resistant plants today but waiting another week before  starting anything else.  The weather here can be weird at times with unannounced frost occurring well into May.  I’ve been burned before so I won’t let it happen again.

Every garden has issues and mine is no different.  I’ve been trying for years to grow big, fat, and red tomatoes with absolutely no luck.  We instead plant the cherry tomatoes which always thrive in the same damn soil.  I had the soil tested and added whatever was needed to get it balanced properly and still no success.  I love making my homemade pasta sauces and salsas but it’s always much better when made with freshly grown tomatoes.

I finished construction of a new type of trellis for my beans.  I’m planting both red and yellow climbing beans which should completely fill this trellis in no time.  We always do well with them and eat those beans all winter long.  There is nothing better  to eat on a cold February night.

I’ll be looking for some kale seedlings in the next few day as well.  Our harvest of kale last summer made our winter soups pretty damn tasty.  I just wash it, blanch it and the freeze it.  I like it almost as well as frozen spinach and I’m hoping I’ll have the same success as in the past.

My better-half is obsessed with sun flowers and required me to set aside an area in the garden for them.  She usually plants a large variety of sizes and colors including the mammoth plants that can get 10 to 12 feet tall.  At the end of the season we allow the heads to dry and they feed hundreds of birds for a few weeks.

Well, the plants have been transferred into the cold frame to await a warmer week. I installed my simple but effective sprinkler system which should keep all of the plants well watered and healthy.  Now all I have to worry about are Mother Natures little helpers.  Deer, rabbits, squirrels, horn worms, and all of natures other little inconveniences that make gardening such a challenge.

Another winter month coming to an end.  It’s hard to believe that it’s March already and we’re within a few short weeks of April and the beginning of another Spring.  Even with all of the snow, sleet, and ice we’ve had this winter it’s just flown by.

Since I’m the ultimate planner I ‘m already looking forward to gardening and how I plan on improving our garden.  You really can’t start too soon in Maine because our growing season is so much shorter than the norm.  Last year we had some successes with the garden and a couple of abject failures.  For the first time I planted collard greens just to see if they’d grow in this colder climate. OMG, a huge mistake on my part.  I didn’t realize just how freaking big those plants could get.  I planted only six plants and they just took over the entire corner of my growing frame.  I was so pissed I jerked them out of the ground and personally delivered them to the compost pile.  I wasn’t even smart enough to keep one or two to eat.  I’m guess I’m in need of counseling to help me manage my Garden Anger.

I like keeping a medium sized garden that produces well and anything that I deem a problem or an obstacle to my goals is gone, gone, gone.  I guess that’s why my compost pile is fifteen feet long and three feet high.

My biggest disappointment is growing tomatoes.  I love to eat them and use them in a variety of recipes but it seems that successfully growing them isn’t likely to happen.  Cherry tomatoes seem to do well both in the garden and containers on the deck but regular tomatoes, no such luck.  I’ve tried different fertilizers, had my soil tested and adjusted, planted a number of variations, all to no avail.  I even went so far as to buy a couple of those upside-down growing bags that were advertised on TV for a couple of summers. They were a huge pain in the ass to start with and never produced a single tomato.  Very frustrating to say the least.

I have a sizeable herb garden which always does well and supplies us with a variety of herbs for cooking year round.  I may try a few new and different things this year like adding additional garlic chive plants, a chocolate mint or two, and maybe two or three varieties of basil and sages.  It’s much more fun to experiment with your plantings when there’s no fear of the plants not growing as expected.  I’ve discovered that most herbs will survive almost anything except a lack of water.

Well, so much for my first taste of Spring Fever.  It all started with this little burst of warm weather today.  I feel as most people in Maine do.  We’ve had our long and snow-laden winter which was beautiful and all but it time to move on.  Very soon we’ll have warm weather, the smell of cut grass, walks in the woods, strolls on the beach, and vacation visits from family and friends who refuse to come to Maine in the winter.  Can’t wait!

Here’s hoping 2013 is as good as expected and even better than last year.  C’mon warm weather, you’ve been missed.
