Today should be added the list of things we should be celebrating on a annual basis. I can’t think of a proper name for this observance so I’ll keep it simple since everyone has always told me to K.I.S.S. Today and on this day forever in this house it will be known as Better-Half Actually Cooking Breakfast Day.  For some unknown reason she’s decided to honor me today with my favorite breakfast.  Crispy bacon, sunny-side up eggs, rye toast, home made  jam, and a cup of hot steaming hazelnut coffee.  I’m not exactly sure what I did to deserve this but it’s such an unusual occurrence that it makes me a little nervous.

Relationships are difficult on the good days but after being together for an extended period of time it becomes possible to understand and anticipate your partner’s way of thinking.  Being the cynical and pragmatic person that I am I’m forced to think that something is up.  I know in my heart that a huge Quid Quo Pro is looming in my future.  What could it be?

It can only mean something that I’ll  probably find distasteful or annoying. Something she knows I’ll not want to do unless she applies her own personal brand of leverage.  She cooks me a favorite meal and then I’ll get to wash and detail her car. That’s always been a good one but has she finally decided to expand her repertoire with something a little more original.  Maybe having me cook food for the people at the Lowe’s store to help in some kind of lame promotion or possibly something related to the grand children.  Many things involving them can be more than a little nasty and disgusting and I always try to avoid them at all costs.  The more I think about this the crazier the possibilities become.  I’ll eat this meal then sit down and wait for the other shoe to drop.

Breakfast has come and gone and I found it uneventful.  I do have to say that the eggs were overcooked and not runny as I’d like them to be. She made a point of telling me before we sat down to take a specific plate because the eggs were more gooey on that one. The eggs on that plate were seriously overcooked and weren’t the least bit runny which translates to no dunking of toast into the yolk. I think her little bit of misinformation was intentional and telling. My best guess is that by cooking the eggs too long she was attempting in an obvious way to insure all future breakfasts will be cooked by me. I suppose you could call that a weird passive-aggressive ploy which unfortunately will probably work.  I wouldn’t want to get stuck eating over- cooked eggs and under-cooked bacon for the rest of my life so I’ll be forced to cook them myself.  She wins again.

I need to spend a little time thinking about this whole situation and to develop my own plan of attack to assist me in getting my own way once in a while.  It’s always been an uphill battle for us men in dealing with our women and I don’t see it getting any easier anytime soon.

There’s no way for us men to ever completely win because while we have the stick the women have the carrot.  Life can be so unfair.

02-17-2015 Journal – Lady, The Tramp, Alvin & Me!   Leave a comment

There’ll be no photographs today through no fault of my own.  It was one of those days that I had a myriad of totally blah things to do.  At the same time all of those chores were immediately placed on the back burner with the arrival of the grandson who was spending the day with us.

I was up early and on my way to a local auto repair shop for my annual car inspection. I knew there was going to be some added costs to this inspection when I couldn’t get my car started a few days ago.  I made it to the shop, had the inspection completed, installed a new battery, and was on my way home by 9 am, no harm, no foul!

I arrived back home just after the grandson was dropped off by his mother and things got interesting very quickly.  Let me just say this.  If I ever see the Lady and the Tramp video again I’ll scream out loud.  We also watched Alvin and the Chipmunks and of course Shrek one more blessed time.  That’s four hours of my life I’ll never get back.

Needless to say our young man is beginning to talk a lot. Unfortunately only he really knows what he’s saying.  As we sat and watched Shrek he talked nonstop for ten minutes as he told me something about the movie but I have no clue what it was. He rambled on and on and was laughing and giggling.  I just nodded and smiled when I thought it was necessary and he was thrilled. Maybe someday soon when he’s a little older he’ll explain to me what the hell was so damn funny.  It had something to do with the donkey but that’s about all I really know. He thought it was hysterical.

Later I invited him into the kitchen to keep me company while I made us breakfast.  He loved the scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast and couldn’t wait to tell his mother I’d cooked for him.  I was happy to get him into the kitchen at such a young age because it’ll make it so much easier to teach him how to cook on down the road.  Once I tell him that most women love a man who can cook for them he’ll be hooked just like I was.

He just left with his mom, had an armload of movies, and a few stories to tell his dad later tonight. He’s just so much fun to spend time with but now it’s time for a serious nap because he wears me out.

I hope your Easter celebration went well.  I usually don’t celebrate Easter since I’m not much of a believer.  If you don’t celebrate it religiously what remains is kind of ridiculous.  Rabbits, colored eggs, egg hunts, and all the other nonsense tend to make me a little crazy.  My better-half loves to celebrate Easter and regardless of my feelings she goes a little overboard (big surprise) every year.

I was ordered to sleep in today because, hoo-ray hoo-ray, she had a day off.  I was told in no uncertain terms that we’d be sleeping in as long as possible to start our day. I was certainly okay with that. I offered to make her breakfast in bed but she declined and then directed me to get dressed so we could get out of the house and spend a part of the day in the sunshine. That sounded good too so I did. We finally rolled out of bed and what do I find waiting for me but an Easter basket with enough candy stuffed into it to feed a large family.  As usual I had nothing for her because I’m what you might call an Anti-Easter person. She wanted to celebrate the holiday and I was making sure we celebrated her day off as well.

She began preparations for our Easter breakfast which I immediately put a stop to.  I told her to get dressed because we were first going out for breakfast and then to the beach.  We drove along the ocean to Old Orchard Beach and stopped for breakfast at one of our favorite spots and it was terrific.  We had a window seat and were able to watch everyone as they arrived in town to walk the beach with their families and pets.  It was obvious that everyone was more than ready for the long winter to finally be over.

The breakfast was excellent and the place was crowded with people enjoying their Easter Sunday.  We stopped back at the car, grabbed our cameras, and hit the beach.  When I say everyone was out I wasn’t kidding. People, kids, dogs, and even a couple of horses were sunbathing and some were even crazy enough to walk in the freezing surf.  It was just wonderful.  We stayed for a hour or two after taking some really cool photographs of our day.

After returning home we just spent some quiet time together and then made the obligatory telephone calls to family and friends.  The sun was still shining so we brought the grill out of storage and reinstalled it back on the deck.  I marinated and grilled two gorgeous steaks while she prepared a couple of salads and baked potatoes.  The food was delicious and when we finished eating we cleaned up the mess and plopped on the couch to relax.

It wasn’t long before she began to yawn and I knew her day was almost over since she had to be up early for work.  She was happy and contented and obviously enjoyed her Easter celebration a great deal. I as always was grateful for our time together which is precious to me.

It was a great day and the perfect way to start our changeover from Winter to Spring. I hope your day was even better than ours.
