08/03/2021 Dream Chasing . . .   Leave a comment

I love to dream and I’m not sure exactly why. It started when I was kid of about eight laying in the grass in my backyard. It was a sunny day and my eyes were closed and I could almost see through my eyelids. I saw crazy swirls and colors that totally captivated me. A few weeks later I was trying to sketch a tree in the yard and I discovered that trees were really boring. I then decided to try and sketch some of those patterns and swirls I saw. It was exciting for a young kid to make that discovery and I actually completed a sketch of them. I tried on a number of occasions to explain what had happened but it was impossible. My mother, a part-time artist herself, politely listened, then just shook her head, and we never talked about it again. Lets jump ahead ten years.

Now I’m eighteen and enjoying my first year of college. It was a school known for it’s excellent art programs and I was finally in my element. All of my friends and acquaintances were artists of a sort and it was a atmosphere in which we were all beginning to thrive. As with any art program you have a certain amount of freedom but are somewhat restricted to what is acceptable for good grades. The wilder and crazier your creations made it more difficult it to get the grades needed to appease the teaching staff. When I tried to do paintings or drawings of bowls of fruit, I wanted to scream out loud. So effing boring. If I wanted a good representation of a bowl of fruit I’d take a picture. My best pieces where those that came to me during what I called my times of half-sleep. Half-sleep is those minutes between REM sleep cycles and the beginnings of wakefulness. It freed my mind and imagination and supplied me with a steady stream of ideas and offbeat perspectives. From that point on I consistently tried to remember and sketch those ideas as I received them each morning.

Jump ahead 50 years. My half-sleep time has now become an important resource which I still use today. Just before I awoke this morning I was half awake and dreaming about this subject and how to best write about it. I woke up and forgot to jot down my notes (always a mistake) and lost the idea immediately. Fortunately as I was relaxing later in the afternoon I began to recall what I’d been dreaming and here we are.

10-21-2015 Journal – Dreams, Both Dry and Wet!   Leave a comment

I’m still lying in bed this morning and wondering what this day will bring. I seem to be unmotivated more than usual and I’m trying to snap out of it but it isn’t working all that well. I just poured my second cup of coffee which I hope will jolt me enough to get me moving.

It’s been a week of cold nights, semi-warm days, and some of the weirdest nightmares and dreams I can ever remember having. The dreams started in earnest about five nights ago and I remember the details rather vividly. That in itself is a little usual and the fact that they’ve been extremely sexual is just a plus I suppose.

I’ve always loved dreaming and actually look forward to having them and remembering them. Dreams just fascinate me.  I realize that almost everything we’ve ever seen or done in our lives is stored away in our brain somewhere but how that information is accessed and displayed in a dream is awesome and mysterious.  It’s like having a time machine that makes it possible for us to drop into our past, see any number of old friends, dead family members, and some special situations with a twist of the weird thrown into the mix.  I especially like the weird dreams and can only pray that I remember all of the juicy little details.  As with everything the devil is always in the details and there seems to be plenty of devil in my dreams of late.

Dreams also make it possible to mend old relationships.  Over the years my dreams have made it possible for me to develop a better relationship with my late father and to even mentally create a better relationship with a borderline horrible ex-wife. Little does she know all of the wonderful things she’s done for me and to me in my dreams.  Some good, some really fantastic, and a few that were utterly disgusting.  Oh baby!

In my dreams I’m always searching for something. I’ve either lost my car or can’t find the person, place, or thing I’m looking for. While I’m searching I run into people I knew or people I thought I knew and have some truly strange adventures.  In many of these adventures I have the ability to fly which is really cool. I’m also naked in many of the dreams which can be troubling but it makes flying a whole lot more fun. I’m not sure why exactly but my dreams have gotten progressively more interesting as I’ve aged. I have no idea why and believe me I’m not complaining.

My morning caffeine is  finally kicking in and this lemon poppy seed muffin is absolutely scrumptious.  I’m almost ready to leap to my feet, throw on some clothes, and go do something. I’ll wait a few more minutes before leaving this bed because I desperately want to rerun the dream I had last night.

Where else but in a dream could I be snuggling up with a warm, naked, and exceptionally friendly, Lindsay Lohan. Up until last night I wasn’t even a fan but after that dream we shared I may have to reconsider her status. I’ve always considered her to be a somewhat sleazy character but in that dream she’s proven herself to be all that and more.

I can’t wait for tonight.

01-04-2014 Journal – Dreaming In Our Reality!   Leave a comment

Another night of weird dreams.  I said WEIRD not WET, so get your mind out of the gutter. Over the years I’ve slowly and steadily learned to love my dreams.  Everyone loves to take a nap or to sleep soundly through the night but not me.  If I don’t have a really good dream as well I’m truly disappointed.  I’ve developed the ability over time to remember my dreams and what is even more amazing is returning to an old dream on multiple occasions  I remember streets and directions in these dreams making it possible for me to visit them again and and again and actually know my way around.  It sounds stupid but it’s really pretty cool.

As I sit here this morning I began to let my love of science fiction kick in.  I’m looking for answers as to why dreams are the way they are.  How can it be possible for a human mind to create places and people we’ve never known and then revisit them multiple times in dreams.  I understand that seeing, meeting, and talking with people from our past in dreams is possible.  We carry millions of subconscious memories in our brain that are available for it’s use.  Can the brain actually create these weird stories filled with even weirder people without any help from our conscious self?  If it can’t then it takes this discussion to a whole new level.

We’ve all seen the movies, The Matrix and Avatar, and enjoyed them.  Let me throw this idea out there.  Maybe our brain really isn’t creating these scenarios at all.  Can it be possible that the life we live and perceive to be our reality is anything but.  Could this reality be nothing more than a giant computer generated program populated with we humans who are nothing more than avatars being used by someone else in their own reality.  Maybe the portions of our dreams we don’t understand are just fragments of memories from the host person or thing whose avatar we are.  They’re living our lives through us and when they’ve finished playing their weird little game they exit from the program and go about their lives.  During that down-time is when we in our reality get to sleep and dream. Our brain retains fragments of their lives and combines them with our own for really strange and sometimes scary dreams and nightmares.

It would explain a lot of things that I have questions about.  In fact it would be very similar to those computer generated role playing games on the Internet in this reality.  People have become so immersed in them at times that their real lives and relationships have been adversely effected.  Those computer generated lives become so real to them that their real lives become secondary causing a serious shift in their reality.  Is that what’s happening when we dream?  Is that why I have dreams and relationships in my dreams with people and places I’ve never experienced in this reality?  I really don’t have the answers but I really enjoy asking the questions and exploring the possibilities.

That’s how my mind spent a few minutes this morning while my better-half was droning on about her schedule for the day.  I was deep into this train of thought and almost got myself in serious trouble when I was accused of not paying attention to her.  Maybe when she reads this it will give her a better understanding of how weird my mind works at time and not to take it so personally.

Well I was planning on spending some time writing about a few useless things today but it appears that won’t be happening.  I was out of bed and on my second cup of coffee and feeling pretty good.  That ended just a few minutes ago without much warning.  I was going downstairs to take out some trash and to turn on the computer.  Our main staircase is about thirty steps straight down to the ground floor and I just made that trip in just under two seconds.

Now I’m sitting here waiting for my ride to the hospital because I think I may have broken my leg or my ankle or just injured them badly.  The pain is bad but not critical but I can’t walk on it at all.  So I crawled to the computer and I’m sitting here writing this just to keep my mind occupied for a while.

I should have known that something bad was going to happen after the weird dreams I experienced just before waking this morning.  I dreamt about meeting up with Bill Clinton, having a few drinks at his club, and then being abandoned when he and his driver unexpectedly left me standing along the road.

I walked a few blocks and managed to  flag down a large car which strangely enough had a cargo of inmates from a local jail.  The driver was kind enough to relay a message via radio to Slick Willie.  He was given our location and told where to met us so he could pick me up.   As his limo drove up he was standing up in the open sun roof waving at the many females walking along the side walk.  He waved to me once, winked cutely, and then drove right on by and off into the sunset. All in all it was typical of what I would have expected from that SOB.  Unfortunately Monica had been nowhere in sight during our encounter and fortunately for me Hillary was missing as well.

That’s the kind of dream (nightmare) I never have.  Dreaming of liberals should have immediately alerted me to the real possibility of problems today but I wasn’t paying close enough attention.   So here I sit in anticipation of a not-so-great day in an emergency room, being poked and prodded, and returning home unable to walk without crutches for the foreseeable future.

Just freaking wonderful Bill.  I thought the days of you making me miserable were over but you’re that proverbial gift that keeps on giving.  Shoot me now.

I’m starting this day at a definite disadvantage.  My mind is fully occupied with what might have been the weirdest nights sleep I’ve ever had.  Do you dream on a regular basis? Do you remember your dreams? I do.  I’ve always looked forward to those nights where the dreams never stop coming and one weird thing after another keeps occurring.

I’ve spent a great deal of time over the years attempting to understand my dreams and even have gone so far as waking up in the middle of the night to write down specific things that I wanted to be sure to remember. They seem to fade so quickly once we awaken which always pisses me off a little.  It’s amazing to me just how much information must be retained by our subconscious. It’s said we humans only use ten percent of our brains in a normal day but I disagree with that.  We may only access ten percent of the brain but I think the remaining ninety percent is just a huge storage area for all of the things we’ve ever seen, heard or thought about.  During dreams the subconscious accesses those memories in bizarre and strange ways and we’re allowed to see them as dreams.  It’s like our own personal weird and screwy home theatre.

Last night I was in a place where fences were everywhere and access was only permitted by the proper authorities.  I was keeping company with a young women who I recognized as Kathy, my very first girlfriend from fifty years ago  and also my first memorable wet and sloppy French kiss. I have to say she was looking pretty good with long slinky hair (which she never had), a pair of extremely tight Capri pants (which she never wore), and a real “come and get me attitude” (which she did have).  We were trying to get out of this fenced area in which we were imprisoned and we worked hard but made no headway.  We wanted very much to make our escape and get to Creighton, PA.  That’s a small, dirty and disgusting little town where my father worked for forty years.  In real life I wouldn’t even want to drive through the place let alone take a girl there.  Oh well, it’s my dream and I’ll figure it out someday, I hope.

This was unfortunately not a sex dream.  I could use a few more of those, but I digress.  Kathy and I, hand in hand, were climbing fences and running and hiding through most of this dream. At one point we ran into an odd assortment of people who were also looking for a way out.  The leader of that group just happened to be my former high school Art teacher who for some reason had a full head of hair.  I never knew him with hair but that’s beside the point I guess.

We found our way into an abandoned building located along a stretch of railroad tracks where we stopped to rest. We were milling around so I stepped to a window to look out at the railroad tracks.  This is where the dream began to slowly become a nightmare.  Just outside the window sitting on a folding chair was my ex-wife, knitting a sweater.  Let me try and figure this out; my first girlfriend, my high school Art teacher, and my ex-wife.  The dream appeared to be going south in a hurry.

We then arrived together in a large parking lot where dozens of weird little cars were parked in long straight rows.  A booth was set up where a person could get a car if they had the proper paperwork and money.  Just show the your papers (which I of course couldn’t find) and pay the fee (which I didn’t have).  I reached into my pocket and found a small round gold object and handed it to the guy in the booth who just happened to be someone I roomed with in college.  I never liked him all that much in real life and he was about to get even.  He refused to give me a car.

Kathy stepped up, took the coin, and bribed the moron and was finally given a car.  Apparently my gold coin was worth a lot more than I thought because she was given three boxes filled with smaller gold coins as change from the transaction.  As we prepared to leave an obvious problem had to be dealt with first.  There were at least six of us and three boxes of gold and those stupid little square shaped cars only held two people each. What to do?

It was at this point that I was angrily awakened by my distended bladder who was screaming for me to find a bathroom, not Creighton, PA.  So I left Kathy and the others in the parking lot with that weird little car and all that gold and returned to reality.

How can my day not get better than that?
