It’s said that most geniuses are borderline crazy. Herre are a few facts that might interest you.

MARK TWAIN

STRANGE BUT TRUE

08/08/2023 Retro Weirdness   Leave a comment

As you should be aware I have quite the collection of weird facts I’ve collected over many years and from many sources. As I was cleaning up my old desk top computer yesterday, I found this list of strange and odd facts that hasn’t seen the light of day since 2006. So, let’s take a walk down a very old memory lane.

  • A Crocodiles tongue is attached to the roof of its mouth.

  • A mole can dig over 250 feet of tunnel in a single night.
  • A monkey was once tried and convicted for smoking a cigarette in South Bend, Indiana.
  • A noisy restaurant is 100,000 times as loud as a watch ticking, a rock Concert is 1,000,000,000 times as loud. and a shotgun blast 1,000,000,000,000 times as loud.

What ever happened to all of those “pet rocks” that everyone loved? How about those fine-looking mood rings that were around for a time. Fads come and go and just when you think you’ve heard and seen it all, another bit of Fad strangeness comes along to baffle and amaze us. You might think our recent Fads are cool and awesome, but we are just the tip of the weird iceberg. So, grab your hula hoop and read on. It’s time to look at the past where our love for Fads originated.

1920 – Raccoon Coats

1924 – Flagpole Sitting

1939 – Goldfish Swallowing

1950 – Poodle Skirts

1955 – Coonskin Caps

1959 – Phone Booth Stuffing

1960 – Tie-dyed T-shirts

1970 – Platform Shoes

1973 – Puka Shells

1974 – Streaking

1975 – CB Radios

1976 – Pet Rocks

1980 – Rubik’s Cube

1982 – Smurfs

1983 – Cabbage Patch Kids

1993 – The Macarena

There’s the proof we’ve been looking for. The Fad gene goes all the way back to early cavemen. Did you honestly think that we really invented the “pet rock?” What will be next now that the “Spinner and Fidgit” fads has run out of gas. I hope the next one is a little more interesting.

HOW MANY OTHERS DO YOU REMEMBER?

04/22/2022 More Weirdness   Leave a comment

Yesterday I posted a few tidbits concerning sexual weirdness laws still being enforced here in our country. With weirdness being the operative word, I thought I would continue with a few more obscure and weird facts that you may not be aware of. It seems that the list grows longer and longer each year.

  • The first step on the moon by astronaut Neil Armstrong was made with his left foot.
  • More Americans choke on toothpicks than on any other item. Ballpoint pens are running a close second.
  • The “gag” rule was instituted in the Senate in 1836 so the Senators would not have to accept, debate, or vote on anti-slavery petitions.
  • Fingernails grow faster on your dominant hand.
  • Tickling requires surprise. Since you can’t surprise yourself, you can’t tickle yourself, either.
  • Fifteen million blood cells are produced and destroyed in the human body every second.
  • The human body has enough fat to produce seven bars of soap.
  • Investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Warren Buffett began his illustrious career by collecting and selling lost golf balls.
  • Over a lifetime, an average human being spends approximately 6 months on the toilet.
  • Ironically the official motto of the state of New Hampshire, printed on its license plates, is “Live Free or Die”, and those license plates are made at a state prison.

This quote belongs to Nancy Reagan and is one of my favorites.

“I think more people would be alive

today if there were a death penalty.”

I’ve been associated with Law Enforcement both as a police officer and also as a private citizen. I’ve seen a lot of things that were more than a little strange and some more than a little scary. So, when I stumbled upon this list that I’m about to post I wasn’t all that surprised. In the past I’ve posted about some strange laws still on the books in this country, but this list takes the cake. This is about weird sex laws gathered from a number of states and to say they’re a little bizarre is an understatement. Here we go . . .

  • In Harrisburg, PA, there’s a law against having sex with a truck driver in a toll booth.
  • In Newcastle, WY, there’s a law against having sex in a butcher shop freezer.
  • In Clinton, OK, it’s illegal to masturbate while watching two people having sex in a car.
  • In Tremonton, UT, you aren’t permitted to have sex in an ambulance.
  • In Alexandria, MN, it’s illegal for a man to have sex with his wife if he has the smell of onions, sardines, or garlic on his breath.
  • In Willowdale, OR a husband cannot talk dirty in his wife’s ear during sex.
  • In Ames, IA, there’s a law against a man drinking more than three slugs of beer while lying in bed with a woman.
  • In Ventura, CA, there’s a law against cats and dogs having sex without a permit.
  • In Kingsville, TX there’s a law against two pigs having sex on Kingsville Airport property.

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE WEIRD

12/02/2021 Synchronicity ???   Leave a comment

The subject of this posting is synchronicity which is just another fancy word for coincidence. Being a former criminal investigator I was trained to believe there is no such thing as coincidence. For quite a few years I truly believed that there weren’t but one midnight shift in the summer of 1974 change all that. I’ll try to keep this as short as possible but I tend to ramble so bear with me.

It was an extremely hot August night; it was Sunday which was one of the slowest days of the week for police business. My partner and I were bored out of our minds because due to the heat there was very little activity. Around 2:30 in the morning we drove back to the state police barracks to check on the desk man who was working alone in the building. We brought him some soft drinks and lunch and we settled down to kill a few minutes.

We walked into the desk area, and it was like a bomb went off in there. He had been given an assignment on a slow night to start purging old reports from the files. We’re talking reports going back for years or more and he had three large trash barrels completely filled with pink slips. The pink slips were slips where each call was recorded and then forwarded to the appropriate officers for follow-up and reports. While both of us felt really sorry for the desk man, we didn’t feel sorry enough to jump into that nightmare. After 20 minutes of whining, we were guilted into helping the poor guy.

I was standing over one of the trash barrels that must’ve contained at least 400 old pink slips. While I was talking to the desk man I randomly picked one up and quickly read the title. Now you got to go back with me a few minutes because an hour or so prior to our visit to the barracks we’d been on a call for a suspicious vehicle at a specific residence at a specific time in the northern part of our county. I looked down at the pink slip I’d picked out of the barrel, and it was dated exactly one year ago and concerned a suspicious vehicle at a specific residence at a specific time in the northern part of the county. It was identical to the call we just completed. Exactly the same residence at exactly the same time and for the same reason. Then it got really weird because the officers assigned to the original complaint were my partner and me. To say we were stunned is an understatement.

To this day I can hardly believe the whole thing happened but it did. I have absolutely no explanation as to how that could have come about which I suppose is what keeps it interesting to this day. It’s made me wonder upon occasion if some of the weird coincidences we hear about are absolutely true.

I just finished reading a book titled Incredible Coincidences, written by Alan Vaughan. He documents dozens and dozens of cases similar to this and of course can offer no explanation for his either. It seems to me that it happens way more than we think if his book is any indicator. I’m still not a big believer in all the weirdness that people alleged is out there, but this incident gave me pause.

WEIRD!

Are you prepared for April Fools Day?  It’s another one of those waste-of-time observances that the United States has become so famous for.  I love practical jokes as well as the next guy but anyone who’s fooled on April Fool’s Day isn’t too bright.  If I wanted to truly prank someone it would be unannounced and unexpected but that’s just me.

I have to admit there is one observance I’ve discovered for April 1st that I could possibly get onboard with. St. Stupid’s Day has been celebrated for thirty five years this year in the most appropriate place you could imagine, San Francisco.  The ‘City By the Bay’ is well known for some of the most ridiculous stunts and political decisions ever. This also includes it’s intimate relationship with the country’s most ridiculous political family, Jerry Brown Sr. and Jerry Brown Jr. or Governor Moonbeam to his friends.

San Francisco is well know for it’s far left approach to almost everything and just when you thought you’ve heard and seen it all, they come up with something even more absurd.  The left coast (well named) has over the years been the cause of much laughter and ridicule brought on by their approach to almost everything.  Here’s a short blurb with a few facts about their St. Stupid Day celebrations.

The Saint Stupid’s Day Parade is an annual parade that takes place in San Francisco on April 1st. The somewhat anarchistic parade was founded by Ed Holmes (aka Bishop Joey of the First Church of the Last Laugh) in the late 1970s. If April 1st falls on a weekday, the parade starts at the foot of Market Street and follows a well established route through the financial district. If April 1st falls on a weekend, the parade starts at the Transamerica Pyramid, proceeds up Columbus Street and ends at Washington Square. The parade begins promptly at noon. Participation in the parade is open to the public and silly costumes are encouraged.

The following list of headlines were obtained from recent articles found in the San Francisco area newspapers. Just reading them will tell you all you need to know about why St. Stupid’s Day belongs in California and San Francisco in particular.

  • Public Sex Exposed This Woman’s Worker’s Comp Fraud
  • Taxidermist Puts Stuffed Animals In Silly Outfits
  • Thugs Throw Milkshake In Woman’s Face, She Throws $2,000 Back

  • A Picnic Table Bigger Than A Football Field Assembled In 30 Seconds
  • Do You Love Nature? Take The Next Step — Go ‘Ecosexual’

Need I say more?  I don’t think so.  So wake up bright and early tomorrow and be prepared to act even more stupid than usual.  Unfortunately I’m reasonably sure the parade won’t be televised, sorry!
