Let me start off by saying that I’m not a beer drinker. I haven’t had much use for drinking beer since my early years of college and even then, I mixed it with Seven-Up because I couldn’t stand the taste. Also, most of the girls wanted it sweetened and who was I to argue? And now I’m living with one of the greatest beer drinkers I’ve ever seen, my better-half. I would easily consider her a professional beer drinker. She knows all the brands, flavors, the history of the breweries, and that makes her an expert in my eyes.

Many years ago, I worked with a man who made her look like an amateur. This guy could sit and drink a half a case of beer, leave the bar, and drive home. I never saw him intoxicated regardless of how many beers he slugged down in the course of the evening. I consistently ragged on him about drinking too much beer because even then I didn’t have much use for it. Finally, he decided to respond to my constant badgering and gave me the list you’re about to read. He felt that I spent most of my time chasing women and that in his opinion beer was way better than women. Here we go, his list of reasons that beer is better than women.

  • You can enjoy beer all month long.
  • You don’t have to wine and dine a beer.
  • A beer will wait patiently for you in the car when you play sports.
  • Beer is never late.
  • Hangovers go away, beer never does.
  • When you go to a bar, you can always pick up a beer.
  • Beer never has a headache.
  • A beer won’t get upset if you come home with beer on your breath.
  • If you pour a beer just right, you’ll always get good head.
  • A beer always goes down easy.
  • You always know if you’re the first one to pop a beer.
  • Beer is always wet.
  • Beer doesn’t demand equality.
  • The beer doesn’t care when you come.
  • You don’t have to wash a beer before it tastes good.

As I was typing this list, I had a small but equally important epiphany. While I dislike beer immensely, I absolutely love bourbon. If I replace the word beer in this list with the word bourbon, it still makes perfectly good sense. I guess it’s true what they say.

LOVE IS BLIND

03-15-2015 Journal – A Slow News Day!   Leave a comment

During all of my working life I prayed for a slow news day. A day where I could sit on my butt and do absolutely northing except relax.  I’ve finally reached a point in my life where I have days like that and I just don’t appreciate them like I once did.  Shame on me I guess.

Two days ago my better-half surprised me when she arrived home from work at 11 am, four hours early.  It was a good surprise and definitely not what you first thought when you read that.  We had half a day to just kick back and do whatever we wanted.  Since it was a sunny and freezing cold day we decided a quiet drive with our cameras would be perfect.  We made our way to the coast but taking pictures there in the winter is a major yawn.  Dirty snow and ice just isn’t anything I need more pictures of.

After a half-hour passed we decided to just drive straight north to Portland  for a visit to a few of our favorite pubs.  Our first stop was a tavern along the waterfront called Three Dollar Dewey’s. This is a regular watering hole for us where the better-half can have her Shipyard beer and a side of fries and I can have an ice cold vodka-tonic with onion rings.  The drinks were grand and the food was even better.

This is the official T-shirt logo for Dewey’s which explains where and how the name of the bar was created.  Maybe next trip I’ll try for a $2 Feelie. Then we walked a quarter mile down the street to our second favorite place, The Dry Dock Tavern.

The Dry Dock is a warm and cozy place to spend an hour or so in the cold Maine winter but it’s even better in the summer.  They have a large second floor deck which offers an unbelievable view of Portland harbor where you can relax and sip a cool margarita or two and catch a few rays.

We had a great day even though it was as cold as hell. The snow melt continues and in just a few weeks  Spring will actually arrive.

I hope to make this summer one to remember.

I’m a huge fan of the English language and I can honestly say I’m as surprised as anyone that I would or could ever say that and mean it.  In high school and college I avoided English courses of any kind  when possible.  As the years passed I gained a real appreciation and love for the language and it’s many humorous uses.

I learned along the way that some people’s sense of humor was instrumental in how they named their children, their businesses, and even their pets.  At times I really wondered what was going through the minds of parents who stuck their children with names that would haunt them for the rest of their lives.  Was it just humor or were they intentionally being  mean and nasty?  Here are a few paragraphs of actual names of actual people who probably aren’t all that happy with their parent’s choices.  As you’ll notice there are even a few celebrities included.

Al Dente, Anita Bath, Anne Teek, Armand Hammer, Art Major, Bud Light, Dick Head, Dick Trickle, Donald Duck, Frank Enstein, Gene Poole, Harry Sachs, Jim Shorts, Justin Case, Lewis N. Clark, Marshall Law, Mike Hunt, Mike Rotch, Myles Long, Olive Branch, Paige Turner, Peg Legge, and Polly Ester.

You just can’t make this stuff up.  If I was saddled with any of these names I would have never forgiven my parents.  Let’s continue with a few more.

Ray Gunn, Rick Shaw, Rip Torn, Rod N. Reel, Sal Minella, Seymour Bush, Shanda Lear, Sue Flay, Tanya Hyde, Tess Steckle, Virginia Breach, Wanda Hickey, Warren Peace, Will Power, Will Wynn, Willie Leak, and Willie Stroker.

As bad as some of these names are many people when starting a business do everything in their power to give it a name that will catch the attention of possible new customers.  Here are a few names of drinking establishments that will do just that  and no I haven’t visited them all.

The Ram Inn, The Happy Medium, Drunken Duck, The Elusive Camel, The Hung Drawn And Quartered, Spread Eagle, Dirty Dick’s, and Filthy Mc Nasty’s.

There is no end to the games that can be played with the English language and of course why would I not mention the ability of some of our illustrious strippers who use names that might just increase interest in their many and abundant assets.

Dixie Normas, July Raine, Skyy Bleu, Dalas Star, Mercedes Dawn, Lexus Paige, Shy Lynne, Stormy Wave, Stormy Weather, Candy Bar, Candy Kane, Alotta Fagina, Caramel DDelight, Rosy Hips, Venus Fly Trap, Cin DD, Candy Cox, and Bambi Thumper.

I don’t want you readers to think for a minute that I know theses stripper names from personal experience.  If I really visited those kinds of establishments I probably wouldn’t live long enough to enjoy them.  My better-half may not be the best shot in Maine but what she lacks in accuracy she makes up in the large amount of ammo she has available.

Just saying.
